MinION USB stick decodes DNA in a matter of seconds

minionhiro MinION USB stick decodes DNA in a matter of seconds

If you happen to be “special,” then this $900 USB device is just about the worst thing ever. The aptly named MINion serves its masters by interrogating the cells of living organisms and rooting out their genetic secrets. We won’t pretend to know exactly how it works, but it starts by pulling a strand of DNA through a razor-like nanotube that unzips the double helix. The nucleotide bases are then electrocuted one by one until they give up their code. The resulting sequence is stored like a ticker-tape readout, for the whole world to see. The MinION can complete its task in seconds and, unlike most other DNA sequencers, it’s portable and simply plugs into a laptop. Luckily, it has so far only been shown to work on very short genomes, like those belonging viruses and bacteria, so for now you’re probably safe.

7-inch Eden Tab launches in Japan this weekend, could become the Xiaomi tablet

eden tab black 7 inch Eden Tab launches in Japan this weekend, could become the Xiaomi tablet

For those who’ve been keeping an eye on Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun, you should already know that after the Xiaomi Phone’s successful launches (most recently in collaboration with China Telecom), the man’s been pondering over whether the Chinese tablet market is worth tapping into. Funnily enough, it turned out that during CES, Kingsoft’s Japanese subsidiary Mobile In Style announced the 7-inch Eden Tab, which just so happened to be co-developed by Xiaomi and shares the same ODM, Inventec, as the Xiaomi Phone. This is no surprise considering Lei Jun also chairs both Xiaomi and Kingsoft, and the two companies have announced partnerships before; though it doesn’t seem like this tablet uses the former’s MIUI software. Read on to find out more.

Speedtest.net overhauled with new look, new features

speedtest 6970 Speedtest.net overhauled with new look, new features

Speedtest.net is pretty much the go-to site for quickly figuring out how fast (or slow) your connection really is and comparing the numbers your ISP boasts with what it actually delivers. And now it’s got a new coat of paint and a couple of neat features. In brief:

  • New UI: The map widget is much improved; it actually looks like a map now, and it’s easy to see where you are.
  • Smart server selection: If there are several test servers nearby, Speedtest will now ping each to see which has the least latency and use that for the test. You can still specify servers manually, too.
  • User accounts: You can sign up for a free account and aggregate results from several computers/connections.
  • Speed Wave: This new feature lets you add your test results to the results of many other users, and get a nice composite view.

All in all, you get some nice, new functionality and a snazzier interface to boot. Nice!

ITC closes the book on HTC’s first complaint against Apple, still working on its sequels

05 12 10htcitc 1273697234 ITC closes the book on HTCs first complaint against Apple, still working on its sequels

Remember that first shot across Apple’s bow that HTC fired way back May of 2010? No? We don’t blame you. Since that initial exchange of complaints against each other the patent war has spun almost completely out of control. Well, in October an ITC judge handed down an initial ruling, rejecting the Taiwanese manufacturer’s claim that Cupertino and crew had infringed upon its patents. Now, almost four months later, a final judgment has been issued, consistent with the initial decision — Apple is not in violation of the patents in question (which primarily concern the dialer and power management features) and the investigation has officially been closed. Don’t get your hopes up too much though, this is just the first complaint in a long series of suits the two have filed against each other and HTC can always appeal in a federal circuit court. In other words, there’s plenty more where this came from.

Opera 11.10 gets HTML5 File API support, IMAP improvements

opera 11 10 speed dial Opera 11.10 gets HTML5 File API support, IMAP improvements

The crew in Oslo keeps plugging away at Opera 11.10, and the latest snapshot build includes a number of improvements to Opera’s built-in email client — as well as HTML5-related additions.

On the IMAP front, Opera now supports special folders like sent items, spam, and trash. It also better handles duplicate items in Gmail — such as those which appear in all mail and under your custom labels.

Opera 11.10 now partially supports the HTML5 File API as well, which means your favorite Web apps (like Gmail) may soon begin adding Opera to the list of supported browsers.

You can download the latest Opera 11.10 snapshot for Windows, Mac, or Linux from the official release post.

Update: The Opera 11.10 RC is now available, as pointed out by SlashZaku in the comments. Thanks!

League of Evil 2 for iPhone review: this is why evil scientists don?t like cyborgs

Should you pick up League of Evil 2? Only if you’re a sucker for over 100 levels of punishment.

League of Evil 2 launched on iOS last week, making a big splash in the top 25. It’s a pretty straightforward platform game with some smooth cortoon graphics. If there’s one thing evil scientists hate more than irate lab monkeys and the pesky PETA people that inevitably follow, it’s mercenaries with a cyborg arm and the singular goal of making them little more than a pile of gibs and goo.mf League of Evil 2 for iPhone review: this is why evil scientists don?t like cyborgs
