Iranian Supreme Leader’s Antifiltering Fatwa Filtered for Mentioning "Antifiltering" [Iran]

The Iranian government’s plan to install a Great Firewall like China’s certainly didn’t take long to backfire. According to reports, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s fatwa against antifiltering tools was almost immediately auto-blocked by the government’s own censoring system—because it included the word “antifiltering.” More »

Samsung’s SGH-i667 ‘Mandel’ Windows Phone: surprise, it’s the Focus 2

mandalfocus2 Samsungs SGH i667 Mandel Windows Phone: surprise, its the Focus 2

Mystery, solved. That SGH-i667 ‘Mandel’ Windows Phone that cropped up earlier in the month (and is shown above on the left)? Word on the street at that point was that it had been nixed from AT&T’s lineup, but somehow, that same device actually made the trip to New Orleans. Sure enough, it debuted at CTIA as the Focus 2, a mid-range followup phone that’s destined to tempt smartphone buyers to the WP7 side with a rock-bottom $50-on-contract price point. Hard to say if Samsung and AT&T mutually decided to carry through with launch plans after initially spiking ‘em (or if that intel was just wrong to begin with), but we can think of it least one recently-canned phone that’s hoping it’s the former.

AT&T and Samsung kill off plans to release the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket HD

samsung galaxy s ii skyrocket hd AT&T and Samsung kill off plans to release the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket HD

If you've been holding out for AT&T to release the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket HD you can now give up the dream and move onto the Samsung Galaxy S III. As confirmed by Samsung's Ryan Bidan, the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket HD has been put to rest on AT&T due to the fact that it just doesn't make sense to release the device now that the Samsung Galaxy S III is out there.

Although Bidan stopped short of confirming that AT&T would see a release of the Samsung Galaxy S III, at this point it's pretty much assumed or in Bidan's words it'll be coming to "the fastest HSPA+ and LTE networks" in the country. That doesn't leave a whole lot of options and surely, AT&T will want to fill that gap.

Samsung snaps up mSpot, teases a boost to media cloud efforts

samsung galaxy s iii music hub small Samsung snaps up mSpot, teases a boost to media cloud efforts

Talk of a Samsung cloud service might not have panned out at the Galaxy S III event, but that doesn’t mean the Korean electronics giant isn’t interested in the space. Samsung has just acquired mSpot, best known for its cloud music storage and its earlier movie streaming tie-ins with carriers. The exact intentions aren’t exactly clear — Samsung is only promising that mSpot’s technology will represent a “key integrated offering” on new mobile hardware. Still, the deal suggests that the Music Hub and Media Hub may get that much more cloud-savvy in the future. When asked for comment, Dropbox coyly stated: “It’s cool. Being single is the new black.”

Final Nail In The Joost Coffin: Adconion Rebrands, Folds Video Service Into Smartclip

Final Nail In The Joost Coffin: Adconion Rebrands, Folds Video Service Into SmartclipLooks like the final frame has been reached for Joost, the online video service originally started by Skype founders Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis and then eventually sold to the Adconion Media Group: Adconion today announced that it would fold in and rebrand Joost Media into smartclip, a video advertising company that it bought in November 2011. The company says it is making the move in order to better serve the U.S. market, where it is now launching services, and presumably believes that using one brand is stronger than using two.

Corel releases VideoStudio Pro X4, we go hands on (video)

videostudioprox4 2594 Corel releases VideoStudio Pro X4, we go hands on (video)

Corel seems to be on a roll lately; after releasing WinZip System Utilities just last week, this morning the company announced VideoStudio Pro X4.

VideoStudio Pro is aimed at home users and small business professionals who want to create professional-looking videos, but without the hassle, steep learning curve and price of Adobe Premiere Pro and the likes.

This new version introduces several features:

  • Stop motion animation: You can now capture still frames using a webcam, camcorder or DSLR and use them to produce an animation. Tools such as “onion skin view” let you compare the previous image in the sequence with the current one and make the animation as smooth as possible.
  • Processor optimization: Corel says the app is optimized for Intel’s new Sandy Bridge systems, and have shown us some graphs with very impressive numbers. We’ve been unable to test this particular point, but if you have a recent-generation Intel or AMD Fusion system, VideoStudio performance should be blazing. Even on our older test system performance was quite impressive.
  • Customizable workspace: You can drag the video preview window to your secondary monitor (if you have one) and tweak just about any other element in the window layout. Once done, you can save your ideal workspace in one of three slots.
  • Share-to-Web: VideoStudio Pro X4 hooks directly into YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook and Flickr, so you don’t even have to launch a browser to upload your final product. Edit, produce and share from within the app itself.
  • Smart Package: Video projects typically consist of many files; Smart Package lets you bundle all video assets for a given project into one ZIP file which you can password-protect and keep in a safe place once you’re done editing.

I’ve had a chance to play around with a pre-release version for a few days, and have put it through its paces editing a short video for my day job. Overall, I’ve been impressed with how easy it was to create pro-looking results. If you do any sort of video editing but are leery of the investment other apps require (both in dollars and effort), VideoStudio Pro is well worth checking out. To see a bit of the interface itself and what the app can do, watch the video after the jump.

Note: We’ll be running a give-away of ten VideoStudio Pro X4 licenses later today, each worth $100 USD. Keep your eyes peeled for the giveaway post!
